Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Henderson stunner sends Reds on way to massive win - 5 things we learned

The Reds skipper scored a stunning long-range strike to put his side 2-0 up before Diego Costa's late consolation

Jordan Henderson

Liverpool picked up an excellent win at Stamford Bridge thanks to Jordan Henderson's stunning strike.
Dejan Lovren has given the Reds an early lead over Chelsea before their skipper made it 2-0 in brilliant fashion.
Henderson picked the ball up from deep before curling an unstoppable strike beyond Thibaut Courtois.
Diego Costa gave Chelsea hope but Liverpool hung on to claim all three points and go fourth.
Here are five things we learned.

1. Reds look real top four contenders

They've had arguably the toughest start to the season but Liverpool mean business.
Jurgen Klopp's men have already faced last term's top three - and now Chelsea - and sit fourth in the table.
Their only defeat came at newly-promoted Burnley, of course.
Klopp will be under pressure to get them in the top four but on this evidence, they'll be right up there.

2. Early blow for returning Luiz

David Luiz went through the wars on his second debut - and was left with a bloodied nose as a souvenir.
The £34million Deadline Day signing was drafted into Antonio Conte’s starting XI in place of injured John Terry.
And he was afforded a warm welcome on his return to west London from the home faithful.
But the feel good factor sour turned sour as the Brazilian suffered a nasty aerial collision with Sadio Mane.

As he challenged for the ball in the air, the 29-year-old planted his head into the back of the Liverpool forward - and came off the worse of the two.
That was just minutes after Chelsea slipped to a 1-0 deficit when Dejan Lovren broke free unmarked to put Jurgen Klopp’s men in the lead

3. Lovren on song

Dejan Lovren made a fine return to the Liverpool starting line-up - at both ends of the field.
His replacement against Leicester last weekend, Lucas, didn't impress and was at fault for the Foxes' goal.
Lovren was back in after his eye injury at Stamford Bridge and was excellent.
The Croat kept Chelsea at bay, besides the Costa goal, and also fired home the opener from an acute angle.
His fitness will be key as the season goes on.

4. Conte's men struggle

After an unbeaten start, Antonio Conte's men slipped up for the first time against Liverpool.
This performance evoked memories of last season's disastrous title defence.

Chelsea were laboured, wasteful and completely out of sorts - and Liverpool made them pay.
The hosts made a game of it for the final 15 minutes but they left it too late.

5. Henderson proves his class

Jordan Henderson has come in for much flak from football fans across the land since his big-money move from Sunderland to Anfield.
But he has rarely let the Reds down, filling the boots Steven Gerrard left as captain with as much effort and endeavour as you could ask for.
Henderson isn't in the same league as Gerrard as a footballer, but showed he has moments of magic in him this evening with a bona-fide goal of the season contender.
His 25-yard dipping effort will live long in the memory for those that travelled from Liverpool to the Bridge.

Player ratings

Chelsea
Courtois 6 - Helpless on goals but nearly let Sturridge shot go through him.

Ivanovic 4 - Exposed once again. It is clear the Chelsea defender is coming to the end.

Cahill 5 - His clearance fell straight to Henderson. Not his best night by any means.

Luiz 5 - Showed why Chelsea sold him in the first place. So poor defensively.

Azpilicueta 6 - Was poor. Not great defensively and offered little going forward.

Kante 6 - Put in a good shift in midfield but he can’t do it all by himself.

Matic 5 - Was very poor until his run and pull back set up Costa. Needs confidence.

Willian 6 - Booked. Tried hard but it did not really happen for him. Frustrating.

Oscar 5 - Limp performances like this suggest Chelsea should bring back Fabregas.

Hazard 6 - Shows willing but if there is no-one to aim at… Better effort than most.

Costa 5 - Got very little service but scored when he finally had a chance.

Mignolet 6 - Poor distribution. Does not look convincing under pressure.

Clyne 7 - Excellent forward runs, looked to overlap and was a real threat.

Matip 7 - A towering, powerhouse of a centre half. Excellent in defence for Liverpool.

Lovren 7 - Terrific finish for a centre half for Liverpool’s opener. Decent game.

Milner 7 - What a great pro. Solid as a makeshift left back, linked up well going forward.
Lallana 8 - Has improved so much under Klopp. Buzzes around everywhere. Excellent.

Henderson 9 - MotM. His wonder goal nicked it amid several outstanding Liverpool displays.

Wijnaldum 7 - Steady and showed lots of energy without setting the game alight. Disciplined.

Mane 7 - His pace, power and movement causes all sorts of problems. A live wire.

Coutinho 8 - Sublime cross for Liverpool’s opener. A beautiful, top class player.

Sturridge 7 - Some lovely moments. Hooked early as he lacks full match fitness.
