Liverpool could break 40-year-old record if free-scoring form continues


Liverpool are well on track to smash through a 40-year-old record this season.
We have already lashed in four goals or more on three occasions this season (Arsenal, Burton, Leicester), despite only playing five games. We have not scored four goals more than 12 times in any season in the last 40 years.
In fact, we have done it only three times in those 40 years – in 1987/88, in 2007/08, and in 2013/14.

In 1988 the teams were Coventry, Newcastle, Derby, Portsmouth, QPR, Watford, Newcastle, Coventry again, Watford again, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday.
In 2008 they were Toulouse, Derby, Reading, Besiktas, Porto, Bolton, Marseille, Portsmouth, Luton, Havant & Waterlooville, West Ham and Arsenal.
And in 2014 we thumped Notts County, West Brom, Fulham, Norwich, West Ham, Spurs, Stoke, Arsenal, Swansea, Cardiff, and Spurs again.
In 1981 and 1983 we did it eleven times, and in 1982 we did it ten times.
And if you want some stunning contrast — after the record-equalling 2013/14 season, in 2014/15 we scored four goals just once.
